Communication Technology

In Communication Technology, students will work primarily in a lab setting to develop their computer graphics-creation, printing and photography skillsets. This is a very hands-on, performance-based course where students will learn a variety of practical, time-management and creative skills that could translate into future career opportunities. 

All Communications Technology courses are worth at least five credits. Students who work efficiently will have time and opportunity to earn extra credits at each course level.

Communication Technology 10

Prerequisite: None
Credits: 5

In this introductory course, students work on developing their skills in the following areas:

  • Printing
    • Printing on shirts
    • Making window clings 
    • Printing on mirrors
  • Computer Graphics
    • Making laser engraving
    • Making memo pads
    • Learning various software programs
    • Understanding the basics of visual composition, elements of design & graphic arts
  • Photography
    • Taking better photos with a DSLR camera
    • Learning about and using a variety of lenses
    • Learning to alter or manipulate photos using the computer
    • Creating new and interesting art using photos

Communication Technology 20

Prerequisite: Communication Technology 10
Credits: 5

In this intermediate course, students will work on:

  • Screenprinting
    • Textile printing
    • Learning how to use multicolour photographic emulsion & release prints
  • Photography
    • Utilizing a variety of photographic techniques
    • Improving photography skills
    • Mastering more features of a DSLR camera
    • Learning how to communicate using photography
  • Desktop Publishing
    • Using programs such as Corel Draw
    • Creating practical designs with real world uses
  • Digital Photography & Processing
    • Expanding knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator & Corel Draw
    • using various photographic equipment)
  • Laser Engraving
    • Using programs to generate designs that can then be produced on the laser engraver

Communications Technology 30

Prerequisite: Communications Technology 20
Credits: 5

In this advanced course students will work on:

  • Screenprinting
    • Textile printing
    • Multicolour photographic emulsion
    • Release prints
  • Multi-Print Design
  • Photography
    • Increasing knowledge of the digital camera, lighting techniques and more
  • Desktop Imaging, Digital Photography & Image Manipulation
    • Using advanced features of Corel Draw, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign
  • Large Format Printing
    • Learning how to use the large format printer
    • Making practical items such as signs
    • Creating gallery quality prints
  • Sign Making
    • Learning how to use the vinyl cutter
  • Customer Service Skills
