MCHS has supported music education through uninterrupted delivery of both choir and band classes for decades. We are proud of the legacy of high-quality music-making in our school community, and our provincially-recognized choirs.
Both the Choir and Band programs of the MCHS Music Department consist of a closely connected community of fellow student-musicians, and allow each student to pursue excellence through unique opportunities for growth and performance.
All students in MCHS Music are expected to attend their scheduled classes in addition to a handful of after-school and weekend events, such as:
- Dress rehearsals
- Concert performances
- Competitive festivals
Individual student participation in Spring Tour and/or any cultural excursions offered throughout the year (such as attending symphony concerts or musicals) is entirely optional.
Students enrolled in each stream of the MCHS music program participate in a single class with their peers at all grade levels. Cross-grading in music classes allows students to experience relationships in a wider circle, find their fit with learners at similar levels and experiences, and develop greater leadership skills.
Instrumental Music 10-20-30 (Concert Band)
Prerequisite: Grade 9 Band or teacher recommendation; basic music reading skills & foundational knowledge of a traditional concert band instrument
Credits: 5 per course level
Instrumental Music offers students the opportunity to improve their playing technique on traditional concert band instruments in an ensemble environment. The Instrumental Music program also covers theory, ear training and music history, eventually progressing to more advanced levels of performance, sight-reading and theoretical studies. Concert Band focuses on full ensemble playing and performance, though at-home practice is always encouraged.
While we encourage all students to purchase their own instrument, we do have various concert band instruments available for rent for a fee of $50/school year. There are no stringed instruments available to rent.
Concert Band is held in one timetable block for students at all three levels. Students earn credits based on the number of years they have been enrolled in the Instrumental Music 10-20-30 stream - 10-level credits for their first year in the program, 20-level for their second year, and 30-level for their third year.
Choral Music 10-20-30
Credits: 5 per course level
Choral Music is a full-year (or two-quarter) course offered to all students who enjoy music and wish to become better singers. Through high quality choral repertoire, this course allows students to develop their confidence, vocal technique and production, general musicianship, as well as solo and ensemble work. No previous choir experience is required.
This is a participation-based course, as students sing for the majority of every class, put on several performances throughout the term, and will have annual opportunities to participate in music festivals and tours.

Students earn credits based on the number of years they have been enrolled in the Choral Music stream - 10-level credits for their first year in the program, 20-level for their second year, and 30-level for their third year. Choir 15-25-35 (Vocal Ensemble)
