Sports Medicine is a complementary course offered to all students who are interested in exploring topics pertaining to kinesiology and medicine. 

Sports Medicine courses will benefit any student interested in:

  • Exercise science
  • Medicine
  • Nursing
  • Emergency response
  • Paramedics
  • First aid

All Sports Medicine courses are worth five credits. Sports Medicine students have the opportunity to earn additional credits by applying their knowledge to provide athletic training to Memorial Athletics students. Students will also receive recognition for obtaining athletic injury management, first aid and CPR knowledge and skills.

Sports Medicine 15

Prerequisite: None
Credits: 5

This introductory-level course covers the following topics:

  • Human anatomy
  • Physiology
  • Health and wellness
  • Athletic injury management
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Nutrition

Students will receive the following certifications upon successful completion of this course:

  • Level A CPR with Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Training
  • Athletic Injury Management 1 Certification from the Sports Medicine Council of Alberta

Sports Medicine 25

Prerequisite: Sports Medicine 15
Credits: 6

This intermediate-level course covers the following topics:

  • Management of athletic injuries
  • Cardiovascular system
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation training
  • Complementary therapies
  • Practical taping and wrapping skills of the foot, ankle, knee and hip

Students will receive the following certifications upon successful completion of this course:

  • Level C CPR with Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Training

Sports Medicine 35

Prerequisite: Sports Medicine 25
Credits: 5

This advanced-level course covers the following topics:

  • Advanced medical technology
  • Human movement
  • Back care basics
  • Anatomy and athletic injury management of the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder
  • Health care provider and standard first aid

Students will receive the following certifications upon successful completion of this course:

  • Standard First Aid
  • Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers
