High School Diploma Requirements

Every student should know the guidelines for the Alberta High School Diploma. It is the students’ responsibility to ensure that they have completed all the requirements to earn their High School Diplomas and be eligible to graduate at MCHS.

To attain an Alberta High School Diploma, a student must earn a minimum of 100 credits by completing:

  • 15 credits English (must complete 30-1 or 30-2)
  • 15 credits Social Studies (must complete 30-1 or 30-2)
  • 10 credits Mathematics (must complete 20 level)
  • 10 credits Science (must complete 20 level)
  • 3 credits Physical Education 10
  • 3 credits CALM (Career & Life Management)
  • 10 credits Options (Career & Technology Studies or Fine Arts Second Languages or Physical Education 20 / 30)
  • 10 credits Any 30-Level Courses (other than English or Social)
  • Additional credits to reach a total of 100

Certificate of High School Achievement Requirements 

Knowledge and Employability Program (KAE) courses provide students with opportunities to experience success and become well prepared for employment, further studies, citizenship and lifelong learning. Staff at MCHS will ensure that students are enrolled in courses that are appropriate to their highest level of achievement.

Students enrolled in the KAE program will achieve a Certificate of High School Achievement once they successfully complete 80 credits in an appropriate combination of KAE and other high school courses. Some students may transition successfully from KAE to other courses in order to achieve a high school diploma or to continue education and training opportunities.

Knowledge and Employability courses are available to students in Grades 10 through 12 who have been recommended from their previous school and have a recent psycho-educational assessment. A consent to enroll form must be completed by parent/guardians. 

To attain a Certificate of High School Achievement, a student must earn a minimum of 80 credits including the following:

  • English Language Arts 20-2 or 30-4 
  • Mathematics 10-3 or 20-4 
  • Science 14 or 20-4 
  • Social Studies 10-2 or 20-4 
  • Physical Education 10 (3 credits)
  • Career and Life Management (3 credits)
  • HCS3000 (must be completed before Work Experience - 1 credit)
  • 5 credits in one of the following options:
    • 30-level Knowledge and Employability Occupational course
    • 30-level Career and Technology Studies (CTS)
  • 5 credits in one of the following options:
    • 30-level Knowledge and Employability Workplace Practicum Course 
    • 30-level Work Experience course (125 hours paid or volunteer work)
    • 30-level Green Certificate course
    • Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) course

Graduation & Ceremony Lists

Lists will be posted in the grad display case at MCHS.

  • The initial graduation list will be posted in November 7, 2024 with recurring updates throughout the year (February 1 and March 27.)
  • The preliminary ceremony list will be posted in May 1, 2025.
  • The final ceremony list will be posted at the end of May 30, 2025.

Students will be removed from the grad list as a result of:

  • Failing marks in required courses (below 50%).
  • Incomplete courses among Graduation requirements.
  • Insufficient graduation requirements (courses dropped or missing).
  • Failure to attend classes.

To participate in the graduation ceremony, a student must:

  • Meet the minimum course credit requirements for an Alberta High School Diploma/KAE Certificate 
  • In each semester, students must have earned at least 50% as a final grade in any required diploma examination subjects. 
  • In Semester 2, students must have earned at least 50% in the school-awarded mark by May 30, 2025, Grad Requirement Update.
  • Registration in Summer School does not qualify students for participation in the graduation exercises.

Academic Achievement Centre or Connection For Learning

Students enrolled in the AAC or CFL must meet the following requirements:

  • A minimum of 75% completed in a 5-credit course by May 30, 2025, and passing.
  • A minimum of 75% completed in a 3-credit course by May 30, 2025, and passing.
  • An average greater than 50% in any courses required for a diploma as of May 30, 2025.

Students enrolled in another institution must adhere to the same timelines as above and must advise their Grade Administrator of any courses in which they are enrolled/completed at campuses other than MCHS or CFL.
